The Ockham Center: A Refuge for the Curious

Welcome to The Ockham Center for Faith, Reconciliation, and Dialog. You’re in the right place if you are:

  • a person of firm religious conviction who is willing to examine what it means to have faith and to deepen their understanding of what faith can offer in an increasingly secular society;

  • someone who still identifies with a religious tradition but struggles with its teachings, its politics, or simply the motivation for practicing a faith in a world that sometimes seems abandoned by God;

  • a “lapsed” believer — one who once practiced a faith but has already grown disenchanted with it and made the decision to walk away, perhaps with some reluctance;

  • someone who’s never really identified with any particular religion (one of the growing “nones”) but is unsettled with the state of the world and our fractured society and who is willing to collaborate with people of faith in seeking personal and systemic transformation; or

  • merely a curious soul with the patience to have read this far without the aid of a video or podcast.

The Ockham Center is a forum – virtual and in-the-flesh – for discussion, learning, and expression.  We examine why someone might cling to religious belief in the 21st century and how it might help or hinder them to cope with the global challenges of the coming years.

While the Franciscan Catholic tradition features prominently in The Ockham Center’s activities, and while there’s a palpable emphasis on Christian faith, all people of good will are welcome, and no particular creed, doctrine, or dogma constrains the discussion.  The Ockham Center is the sort of community you come to when you realize you don’t have all the answers and seek the insights of others who’ve made this discovery of themselves. We see the fruits of religious belief not in mastering “correct doctrine” but rather in forming better questions.
